"when his goodness confers happiness without merit, it is grace; when it bestows happiness against merit, it is mercy; when he endures rebels, it is patience; when he keeps his promise, it is faithfulness, when it consoles a distressed person, it is pity; when it provides for a destitute person, it is generosity; when it helps an innocent person, it is righteousness.
this attribute is so full of god that it defines all the rest and broadcasts his infinite delightfulness. his wisdom might strategize against us, his power crush us, his holiness terrify us--but his goodness directs them all for our good and makes them all kind to us.
whatever beauty or comfort we enjoy in this world, we are indebted for them all to his goodness. it is god's goodness that his wisdom plan for us and his power to act for us. it is his goodness that prevents his holiness from making us afraid and his goodness that sends his mercy to relieve us."
